Vision Therapy (VT) is a progressive, individually tailored
program of visual procedures supported by continued evidence-based
research. Its primary goal is enhancing everyday life by correcting
visual problems and improving fundamental visual skills and
abilities, thus improving visual efficiency and comfort. How? VT
works to change the way in which you process and interpret visual
information.
Vision primarily takes place in the brain. Your eyes are like the
doorway, merely relaying visual information to your brain. Even if
you have perfect visual acuity (“20/20 vision”), it doesn’t
necessarily mean that your eyes are working perfectly with the rest
of your visual system. If there is dysfunction within your visual
system, a variety of adverse symptoms can manifest themselves.
VT can help correct this by literally strengthening the eye-brain
connection. Seeing is a neuromuscular activity, and like every muscle
in your body, your eyes can be trained or retrained (in the case of
strokes or serious head trauma) to work better with your brain
through a series of treatments and exercises using optical devices
(optical instruments, computers, lenses and prisms) under the
guidance of VT professionals.
Possible symptoms: blurry vision, focusing problems, eye fatigue, headaches, double vision
trouble concentrating, poor reading comprehension, skipping lines while reading,
confusing small words, poor handwriting, trouble catching a ball.
